I would start this post
saying that I love shoes and I have quite a good number of footwear of
different manufacturers. I usually don’t love to wear the same shoes
frequently. So, you would find all my shoes almost brand new, which feels nice
to me. I recently came across an advert for a company named MBT or Masai Barefoot Technology, who claimed to design “Physiological Footwear”. While watching the
ad and then out of more curiosity, I went through the history of MBT to find a
Swiss engineer named Karl Mueller discovering the benefits of walking barefoot
on paddy fields. The goal of MBT shoes is to evenly distribute
the impact pressure that walking creates not only on your feet but on your entire
body. The idea is quite cool! Their website states the benefits of wearing the shoes
such as improving posture and balance, burning calories, aligning your gait,
reducing back, joint and hip problems, activating neglected foot muscles, etc.
How do they look?
As soon as you see any pair of MBT, you will
immediately notice the difference in design. The shoes have large curved outer
sole that looks quite funny. The model I tested was Time Service Velcro, which
is a classic water and slip resistant shoe. It had a strap closure system with water
resistant full grain leather uppers finished with a microfiber footbed. Looking
at the overall construction of the shoe, you will find them meticulously
designed keeping in mind the longevity of the shoe. They had a fine stitching
making them good for working or working out.
How do they feel?
Immediately after wearing the shoes, you will feel
like losing your balance. It is natural for this kind of shoes since the sole
is curvaceous with the heel area and the tip not touching the ground. MBT health shoes are designed to activate all your
muscles to keep your body straight and in balance to prevent a fall. After
wearing a few times, you can stand straight in the shoe without any problem. Your
posture will improve vastly and you will actually feel taller; at least I felt
so at 5’8”. The shoe fitted perfectly
and I wear thicker socks that were cozier for me. Another thing to note is the
weight of the MBT. Due to the thick outsole, the shoes were quite heavy unlike
other shoes available in the market. They easily weigh about twice as much as
any ordinary footwear.
For sport and fitness
I came to know many world champions and Olympic
medallists use MBT’s during training sessions to improve their performance. Training
with MBT helps to improve coordination, strengthening of postural and
joint-stabilising muscles, running style, power and speed, endurance,
flexibility, etc. They also prevent accidents onsite and injuries.
Anything more?
Overall, I think these shoes would be a welcome
addition to anyone looking to improve their posture and tone their leg and foot
muscles. I would especially recommend these shoes to people whose work compels
them to stand or walk for prolonged time. The one I tested was quite reasonably
priced. Besides, the company keeps on offering sale on its specific models of MBT men’s collection and MBT women’s collection at different points of time. As long as shoes improve
your body in the long run, price should not be a concern.
